In 1736 Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) was appointed professor of the newly founded University of Göttingen. In the same year he established the Botanical Garden. He stayed 17 years in Göttingen and the amount of work achieved by him is enormous. Apart from his professorship he foundend the Botanical Garden, an anatomical museum, an obstretrical school and similar institutions, he carried on without interruption original investigations in botany and physiology, the results of which are preserved in the numerous works associated with his name; he also conducted a monthly journal (the Göttingische gelehrte Anzeigen), to which he is said to have contributed twelve thousand articles relating to almost every branch of human knowledge.
