Large-4to (290 x 230mm). pp. (20), xxviii, 408, with an engraved portrait of Martini and a fine hand-coloured frontispiece, 16 ochre tinted engraved figures in the text and 31 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary calf, gilt ornamented spine with red and green gilt lettered label (slightly rubbed).

The first volume of this beautiful work, the first large scale iconography on shells. It was published in 11 volumes, plus a later published supplement, from 1768-1829. The present volume contains: Seerören und Seewurmgehäuse; Napfschnecken; Meerohren; Milchnäpfe; Schiffsboote; Ammonshörner und Bischofsstäbe; Kugel- oder Blasenschnecken und Meernüsse; Porcellanschnecken. A few text leaves with some occasional faint staining in the lower margin. Nissen ZBI, 2722.
